The
McIntyre
Seniors League

League Championship 2008.

The 2008 league programme is now complete and Helensburgh Seniors reign supreme.

After taking the honours in 1979, sharing the trophy with Cardross in 1990 and winning outright the following year, one of the original clubs in the McIntyre League has ended a lean spell by showing the rest of the clubs a clean pair of ‘Golf Shoes’. Tucked in behind early leaders Balmore, Helensburgh edged into the lead at the end of May and thanks to the efforts of new team captain John Cleland kept up the pressure as the rest slowly dropped away. This year the competition was intense at the top with Balmore, Vale of Leven, Kirkintilloch and Dumbarton, all looking to overtake the leaders. Flooding caused a backlog of matches with the result that near the end of the campaign three clubs were forced to play two matches in a week, and as often happens the main challengers were beating each other and gradually slipping further behind – except Milngavie that is.

Under cover of this ‘Dog eat dog’ – seven times winners - Milngavie were making their charge from further down the table after a slow start but had to be content with second place as John Clelend’s Helensburgh troops (27 Pts) gallantly held out to win by one point from the defending champions (26) with Vale of Leven and Kirkintilloch close behind.

The League Trophy will be presented to the new champions at Windyhill Golf Club on Wednesday 24th September.

Well Done Helensburgh!!!
